Gold mining began in the country in the mid-1990s, and today, the country is the world’s 13th largest gold producer. (Sources close to the government have said it hopes to become the world’s sixth largest gold producer by 2020.) Over the last decade, the country’s annual gold production steadily climbed, from just under 12 tons in 2003 to just under 20 tons in 2012.
